Less frustration. More beekeeping. For sale is three pounds (3#) of wood chips for use as fuel in your bee smoker. This is the same type of fuel we have successfully used in our apiary. Why are these chips so successful? Here’s a list of reasons:The chips are varied in size and composition. This permits enough airflow to allow your smoker fire to stay lit. (I got tired of having to relight my smoker all the time!)Because the chips are organic, the smoke is natural and similar to what bees would encounter in the wild in a forest fire situation. (Do you really know what is in the compressed pellets from overseas?). Beekeepers don’t have to worry about unknown or harmful chemical additives. The hardwood lights quickly and easily and can generate a good base/starter flame to get your heat set before adding the additional fuel to create the smoke.The chips are smaller than pine needles. This means they don’t tend to stick up and out of the edges of your smoker. You can easily add more or less to fill your smoker without having annoying pine needles hamper the closing of your lid. I have pine trees near my apiary, but closing the lid always seemed to be a hassle with the needles. The fuel lasts for a reasonable amount of time. This depends on the amount of puffs, size of smoker, and similar factors, but with multiple colonies, I usually end up filling my smoker only once or twice during an afternoon’s work.See the photos for an example of how we start the process with a small amount of chips in the bottom, light the fire, puff the bellows to get the fire strong and hot, and then add more chips to begin the smoke production process.
